FAQs – Christmas decorations

General questions about Christmas decorations
Why do we have Christmas decorations?

There is a long tradition of decorating for Christmas in the weeks leading up to the festive season. This helps to create a festive atmosphere and strengthen and share the spirit of the festivities. Christmas decorations on windows and houses and bright lights on houses also increase the anticipation of the upcoming Christmas celebrations. In many families, decorating the home is also a family tradition passed down from generation to generation, giving family members the opportunity to spend time together and create memories. For many people, the religious significance of Christmas is also important: Christmas decorations such as nativity scenes, angels and other biblical symbols and figures are therefore often part of the decorations to emphasise the spiritual aspect.

When can I start putting up Christmas decorations?

Christmas decorations help to increase the sense of anticipation and shorten the wait for the festive season. But when is the right time to start decorating? While Christmas biscuits and gingerbread can be found on supermarket shelves from late summer, the situation is a little different when it comes to Christmas decorations. People in the United States start decorating their homes first: immediately after Thanksgiving, which takes place in mid-November, Christmas decorations in all their shiny glory are put up in homes and on the streets. In contrast, people in German-speaking countries, i.e. Germany, Austria and Switzerland, often wait until December to start decorating. Many people choose the first Sunday of Advent as the starting point for putting up Christmas decorations. Do you think the start of the Advent season is too late? Then you can also use the dates of the liturgical year as a guide. For example, on the Sunday before Advent, which always falls on the last Sunday before the first Sunday of Advent and marks the end of the Christian church year.

How long can I leave my Christmas decorations up?

The holidays are coming to an end and New Year's Eve is fast approaching. When is the right time to remove the Christmas tree and decorations from your home? There is no standard answer to this question. Depending on your personal preferences, you can decide for yourself how long you would like to enjoy your Christmas decorations. Or you can use certain dates and holidays as a guide.

The Christmas season in the narrower sense ends on 6 January (the Feast of the Epiphany). Many people also dispose of their Christmas trees by this date. For the Catholic Church, the first Sunday after the Feast of the Epiphany marks the official end of the Christmas season. However, some people leave their Christmas decorations and trees up for exactly 40 days after Christmas Eve. On this day, Candlemas is celebrated and by then, at the latest, the Christmas season is finally over.

However, if you don't want to align your decorations so much with Christmas, but more with the whole winter, you can of course leave them up longer – for example, until the first rays of spring sunshine appear.

What all goes into Christmas decorations?

While Christmas decorations in and around homes looked relatively the same just a few decades ago, the range of what is considered Advent decoration today has increased greatly. In the past, green, red and gold were the main Christmas colours used, but today you can create a wintery atmosphere with almost any colour, such as pastel shades, light blue, purple or white. There are now also many more products available than in the past when it comes to decorative elements. Here is a brief overview.

  • Fir wreaths: Whether on the door, above the fireplace or on the table – Christmas wreaths, with or without decorations, are THE classic when it comes to decorative elements during the festive Advent season.
  • Lighting: What would Christmas be without twinkling lights? From fairy lights on the Christmas tree and house entrance to glowing Christmas stars in the window: practical LED lighting offers you countless possibilities for your Christmas decorations.
  • Christmas garlands: Garlands are particularly suitable for decorating large areas in a festive way. For example, stair railings, large dining tables or door frames. As a rule, Christmas garlands are also easy to attach and available in different sizes and colours, with or without decorative elements and lighting.
  • Christmas tree decorations and figures: In addition to baubles and tree toppers, you have endless possibilities for decorating your Christmas tree. LED fairy lights, tinsel, fir cones, Father Christmases and angels – many of the things that are actually used as Christmas tree decorations can also be used as Christmas decorations on the window or in your home, such as Christmas figures.
  • Christmas trees: Almost every home has a Christmas tree. Artificial Christmas trees have become more and more popular in recent years. Strictly speaking, a Christmas tree is not just a decoration, but an essential part of most households. However, if you only have a small amount of space in your home, a small artificial Christmas tree can also be used as a decorative element in your Christmas decorations.
  • Small design elements: snow globes, Christmas candles, festive tablecloths, snow-covered wreaths or glittering Christmas decoration branches add the finishing touches to an atmospheric interior. There are no limits to your creativity. Need some inspiration? Then take a look at our festive Christmas decoration ideas!

Which Christmas decorations go with which interior design style?

Many of us have a box of Christmas decorations that we take out of the cellar or attic every year to decorate. But there is another way! Your home will look truly magical if you match your Christmas decorations to your individual furnishings and preferences.

  • Christmas decorations in a country house style: This style of living is characterised primarily by cosiness, warm colours and natural wood tones. To capture that feeling of being close to nature during the Advent season, you can use pine cones, Christmas decorative branches, cream-coloured fabric bows, winter wooden figures and lanterns. You could also use fairy lights with warm white light and pendants with natural motifs (e.g. apples).
  • Christmas decorations in a boho style: Do you like mixing styles and striking eye-catchers in your interior design? Then your Christmas decorations shouldn't be too subtle either, but should create a bright play of colours. For example, with nostalgic decorative elements such as Christmas baubles, stars, tea lights and vintage candle holders in gold, red or even bronze. Round and geometric vases with artificial winter flowers such as poinsettias, Christmas roses or amaryllises are also a real eye-catcher!
  • Christmas decorations in an industrial style: cool, modern and straightforward – although the distinctive characteristics of industrial chic do not really seem to go with traditional Christmas decorations at first glance, there are also exciting combination possibilities here. Metallic colours are a great option for design elements such as candle holders, baubles or stars. Winter window decorations made of glass or acrylic also go very well with the industrial look. Neon lights with Christmas motifs or lettering are also a real eye-catcher and add variety to the otherwise classic Christmas lighting.
